Much Ado about Mailing Lists & Newsgroups
DearREADERS,
Apparently some believe that I've misstated the issue concerning the
problems long associated with arrival of MAILING LISTS to AOL email boxes.
I apparently further compounded the issue when I pointed out AOL's new
policy to cease direct support of NEWSGROUPS in "early 2005."
If you'd care to read Dick Eastman on the subject of AOL emails not
arriving, go to:
Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter: AOL Mail Problems
http://eogn.typepad.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2004/08/aol_mail_proble.ht
ml
If you'd like to read about the challenges experienced by AOL users who
subscribe to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, there is a mailing list devoted to the
subject:
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index
If you'd like to read about AOL's new policy about Newsgroups, go to:
http://help.channels.aol.com/article.adp?articleId=218626&catId=2&sCId=456&s
SCId=4202
which states "Please note: Beginning early 2005, AOL will no longer be
providing direct access to newsgroups. We apologize for any inconvenience."
For these several reasons, I'm finding it hard to maintain faith in AOL as a
resource for reading the mailing lists I subscribe to via RootsWeb. Columns
a week or so ago suggested alternative mail servers and ISP (internet
service providers.)
All of my DearMYRTLE columns include my personal opinions. And you know ol'
Myrt here does have opinions!
If your opinion differs, I appreciate your right to have that opinion. I
enjoy feedback from readers because it indicates we're at least talking
things through. The two of you who have been flaming me via email and
message boards recently are free to unsubscribe from the DearMYRTLE mailing
list if you are uncomfortable with the work we're trying to accomplish in
these discussions.
Happy family tree climbing!
Myrt :)
