DearMYRTLE, your friend in genealogy

Mailing List Manners,
DearREADERS,
Please note the following advice to those who wish to unsubscribe and
attempt to do so in an inappropriate manner. While this mentions a specific
mailing list, this could easily apply to any RootsWeb mailing list. I should
note that angry, inappropriate people get blacklisted from a list, and that
can be reported on a system-wide basis in the case of spammers and email
addresses that post obscenities.

Dear [name withheld]
I don't know who is monitoring this list, but there has been no reply to
your request in all caps (considered yelling in the online world) to "PLEASE
REMOVE ME FROM THE LISTS!!!!" I don't know if all your genealogy mailing
lists are at RootsWeb, or if you have also subscribed to some at Yahoo and
elsewhere. This email is about the RootsWeb mailing lists.
I'll try to help you out.
The RootsWeb genealogy mailing lists have a computer that monitors the
subscribe and unsubscribe requests. Unfortunately instead of addressing your
request to that computer, you made a posting to the mailing list for all of
us subscribers to read. As readers, we can not process your request. You
must specifically address your unsubscribe email to an address for the
computer that manages each individual mailing list you no longer wish to
read.
See: http://lists.rootsweb.com
It is there that you will find a complete index to RootsWeb's 28,946
genealogy mailing lists. You will find the specific directions for each of
the mailing lists you wish to cancel. Each mailing list "directions" include
how to:
-- Subscribe
-- Unsubscribe
-- Search the archives of previous messages
-- Browse the archives of previous messages
For example at:
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Software/PERSONAL-HISTORIAN-USERS.html
It reads:
# Unsubscribing. To leave PERSONAL-HISTORIAN-USERS-L, send mail to:
with the single word unsubscribe in the message subject and body.
To leave PERSONAL-HISTORIAN-USERS-D,
do the same thing with:
Unfortunately, those of us who read such an upset unsubscribe "command" are
powerless to help you. Expecting each of the volunteer mailing list monitors
to do this for you is unreasonable, and should be expected only in extreme
cases. It may be that our PERSONAL-HISTORIAN-USERS list monitor is away for
the weekend? Not sure. Regardless, when we signed up for a RootsWeb mailing
list we received a confirmation email with directions for unsubscribing.
Just as with the local newspaper delivery, electric and telephone and cable
company service, we must take the appropriate action to cancel the service
provided through these wonderful RootsWeb genealogy mailing lists.
Good luck!
==========
Happy family tree climbing!
Myrt :)
