READERS' FEEDBACK: Copyrights, Photo Studios & FHCs

RE: Everything is Protected by Copyright

From: <>
DearMYRTLE,
My husband is in the newspaper business, so copyright law, etc. is certainly
understood at our house! I am always surprised at the liberties people are
willing to take with those laws. Particularly with photographs, but
certainly with the reprinting of newspaper and magazine articles. Or
cross-stitch patterns, computer software, etc. Thanks for reminding everyone
once again. From the excerpt of the writer's letter, I wondered if she has
used all her genealogist skills to track down the original writers of the
publication. If she hasn't tried, and is successful, it would make her
reprint issues so much simpler. And legal! Judy Lloyd, Grand Rapids, MI

DearMYRTLE,
Hello, Myrt. Perhaps you already suggested this to MaryAnn -- has she looked
to see if this book is in the Family History Library catalog at
www.familysearch.org? If it is, then whether it's been microfilmed or not,
it IS available to other researchers. Cheers, Dolly in Maryland.

From: John Ciolina <>
DearMYRTLE,
I am wondering, if a person extracted the pertinent genealogy info without
the personal info from a book, if that would be legal and "postable" as
research. John Ciolina USN-Ret.

NOTE FROM MYRT: We always need to cite our sources. I would use the book for
clues so I could put my hands on photocopies of original documents to prove
or disprove family relationships.

RE: Ancestor Photo Submission Checklist

From: Sharyn Hay <>
DearMYRTLE,
Don't forget to remind people that a studio photo of a studio still in
existence may still be under copyright. This is especially true for photos
taken in the early 1900s. Most photo shops will not reproduce these photos
if there is a studio name on them.

RE: Why Use a FHC?

From: <>
DearMYRTLE,
The FHC is alive & well. All of my ancestors are located in Ireland's
records. I have found many on the www.familysearch.org website or at the
FHC on Cortez Road in Bradenton, FL. The volunteers are always there to help
whenever necessary.
