Martin PALMER was born in Virginia in 1778. As an adult, he changed his
name to PARMER. He was a member of the first Missouri General Assembly and
later a Missouri State Senator. He came to Texas in 1825. In 1826, he
instigated and led the Fredonian Rebellion, an early attempt to seperate
Texas from Mexico. In 1835, he was a delegate to the Consultation at San
Felipe and later a member of the General Council of the Provisonal
Government of Texas. In 1836, he signed the Texas Declaration of
Independence from Mexico and was Chairman of the committee that drafted the
Constitution of the Republic of Texas. In 1839, he was appointed Chief
Justice of Jasper County, Texas. He was married four times. His wives were
HARDWICK, NEAL, LOUT (originally ANDERSON ), and KELLY. Most of his
children went with the PALMER spelling of the family nam!
e. Martin PARMER died in 1850 and is buried in the State Cemetery in
Austin, Texas. PARMER County, Texas is named for Martin PARMER.
