PRESS RELEASE

The New England Historic Genealogical Society has named Thomas J.
Kemp to the position Library Director. Mr. Kemp will assume
responsibility for the Societys library, located in Bostons Back
Bay, featuring the regions most extensive collection of family
history materials and the nations largest collection of
genealogical manuscripts. Mr. Kemp will also oversee operation of
the Societys circulating library, a collection of 25,000 volumes
available by mail to the organizations 18,000 members around the
world.

Mr. Kemp, who is currently employed as Head of the Special
Collections Department of the University of South Florida, is a
nationally known librarian and genealogist. He has served as the
Chair of the Council of National Library and Information
Associations, Chair of the History Section of the American Library
Association, President of the American Society of Indexers , and
Vice President of the Association of Professional Genealogists. He
is currently Program Chair for the American Library Association
History Section, Editor of For the Record, and Chair of the
Associations Genealogy and Local History Discussion Group. Mr.
Kemp was previously employed as Library Director of the Historical
Society of Pennsylvania.

He is the author of many books and articles including The
International Vital Records Handbook; The Connecticut Researchers
Handbook; and Genealogy Annual: A Guide to Published Sources 1995-.
The current focus of much of his work is the availability of
genealogical resources on the Internet. His publication, Virtual
Roots: A Guide to Genealogy and Local History on the World Wide
Web, is in its third printing and has sold 10,000 copies.

A widely recognized lecturer, Mr. Kemp has been keynote speaker at
for the Federation of Genealogical Societies Annual Meeting and
will be a featured speaker at their national conference this summer
on the topic, Trends in Genealogical Publishing. In June he will
convene a workshop at the annual conference of the American Library
Association meeting on Roots on the Web: Practical Sites for
Harried Librarians.

A native of New England, Mr. Kemp received a BA in History from
Brigham Young University, from which he also received a MLS degree.
He has received a Certificate in Archives Management from the
Society of American Archivists; Certificate for Preservation and
Restoration of Photographic Images from the Rochester Institute of
Technology; and participated in courses on Microfilm Preservation
Training and School for Scanning at the Northeast Document
Conservation Center; and HTML, SGML, Digital/Microfilm Preservation
from SOLINET. Mr. Kemp served for six years in the U.S. Navy. He
is married and the father of two children."
