I see you have had "explanations" from several people,so I won't repeat
it,but yes,the miniature silver symbols were wrapped in greaseproof paper
and put in the pudding.It was made with
flour,breadcrumbs,suet,currants,raisins,sultanas,cherries,brown
sugar,treacle, mixed spice and lots of brandy or whiskey or both.You wet the
linen cloth,rubbed flour into it,then put the mixture into it,tied it
up,boiled it for about 4 hours,took it out and hung it up in a cool airy
place to dry and mature.Every couple of weeks you drizzled a little more
brandy over it and on Christmas day you boiled it up again for about an
hour, took it out of its cloth,poured a spoonful of warm brandy over it, lit
it,and when the flames went you cut it open and served it with brandy
butter[hard sauce - real butter, icing sugar and brandy]and thin hot
custard.The smell and taste will live in your memory for ever !!! Betsy
