Andrea,

I have a similar situation in trying to find Ships records. However, I have
heard that after 1700, they were not kept
by Spanish Gov & if they still exist (which no one knows) they would be in
the hands of the Castro Gov, shipping co's (exisiting today only if the
shipping co is still in biz)or if we are lucky, they might have fallen into
the hands of a genealogist.

I am not sure of the case with Brittan, but from many European ports, ships
stopped in NY, it is probably too early for Ellis Island ships manifests
(which are a mess before 1900 and only go back to 1880's), but there is also
that chance.

You might want to find out whether a group of men did get together to go to
work in mines (as the other Carribbean lister suggested) & work from a list
of names on that end. Perhaps there was a concerted effort to recruit labor
in England.

Many came to London as i understand, drawn to that city from the
countryside, but found little more than hard times. My Gram's step-father
was one such person, however, due to the number of people named "Joseph
Butler (a baker by trade)" in England & US between his birth in 1869 & his
marriage in 1900, i might have a tough time! You are fortunate to have an
unusual name!

Good luck

Jeannine
