It was the tradition during the Middle Ages that was carried over by most
spanish countries to name the first born son with the name of the paternal
grandfather, the second born son with the name of the maternal grandfather,
the third with the fathers name, and the same with the girls. The tradition
stayed with us, but changed slightly because most named the first born son
with the fathers name and sometimes the grandfathers name in the second
place. Probably that is why there are so many Serapios in the family! The
saints day usually got the third place.
In the Middle Ages, when lastnames were not used as we do now, the first
name was an indicator of whom your family was and sometimes it got changed a
bit......Garces...García, Garci, etc....they were sons and grandsons of
Garci and so you could make the genealogy of the family.
Hope this brings a ray of sunshine in your inquiry......don´t feel bad, my
maternal grandmother was.......Basilisa......of all things.
By the way most of those names are from the north of Spain, they come from
the visigoths. Ulpiano, Recesvinto, whole lot of them.........and they are
horrid.....for us now. They were very nice for the goths.... LOL....
