Dear María:
A very interesting piece of history. I assume this happened shortly before Maceo
was kill in action. For some reason Martínez Campos was not pursuing war as
aggressively as required by the situation and thus playing unto the old US
designs for Cuba. This situation ended when General Valeriano Weyler took over
command and thus, revolution ended, the need for direct US intervention to take
over the rest of Cuba; the first part of the province of Cuba was taken over in
1819. Maceo an Martínez Campos new each other, sympathized and had had meeting(s)
as both were franc masons. This whole period is very unprecise as it seem that
Spain, after the war, choose to ignore whatever happened and set to reconstruct
whatever was left.
It is very interesting the lack of information about General Joaquín Vara de Rey
and the homage and recent recognition to Admiral Cervera y Topete. I had hope for
more information and further clarifications at the centenary, which I'm still
waiting.
By the way, what ever happened to your forebear after the war was over. In Puerto
Rico it was a very sad period and oppression was strongly set for the next 50
years, with W.W.II and the communist spread the local situation liberalized but
with "care". Now it is starting to get for the worse.
My first impression is that your Terry most probably came from southern Spain to
Cuba. Certainly a matter worthwhile investigating.
Best regards,
Cancio
