Georgina:
If a document says "natural de" that means that the person was born at
that place. I have several Cuban birth certificates (including mine) of the
kind they used to issue in the 1950s; they are two-page long narratives that
include the names and nationalities of the parents and grandparents; some of
the names are followed by "natural de Canarias" others say "natural de
Cárdenas" or "natural de Camarioca" or whatever town they were born in. My
mother's birth certificate refers to her parents and three of her
grandparents as being "de esta naturalidad" (they were born in Cuba), and
for her other grandmother it says "de Canarias". I know those are accurate.
If your father said that he was from the Canary Islands, it was probably
in the same sense that Irish-Americans refer to themselves as Irish even
four or five generations after their family migrated. We never thought of
calling ourselves Canarian-Cubans, but we didn't want to lose our ancestral
identity either.
