How clear is the phone quality on net2phone?

I installed an Internet phone-call software (not sure if it was
net2phone)and used it to make 2 test phone calls locally. The quality, at
least on those 2 calls was like that of a walkie-talkie or CB radio. The
words were breaking and parts of syllables were inaudible.

I am concerned about surveillance of these Internet phone calls. I don't
know how the technology works, but it's not too far-fetched to assume that
someone at the company (or elsewhere?) could monitor those calls, just like
your email messages sitting on someone else's server.

There is a lot of very personal, identifying data related to genealogy. I
would have concerns over privacy issues.
