Sue,
You are partly right about Fernandez, only that I think it is more popular
than Smith. The Fernandez surname can be found just about anywhere that is
Hispanic. I don't have a GILLOT. There was a popular Spanish singer named
Maria Luisa Gillot (it might have been spelled Guillot, but not sure) who my
Mom loved to listen to when I was younger. That one is not a popular name.
Have you tried searching from that direction? It may be easier that going the
Fernandez route.
The Fernandez in my tree comes from two different branches. My paternal great
grandmother MariaDeLaEncina (from Leon, Spain), both of her parents were
Fernandez (Manuel & Maria), Then she married Marcial Fernandez (also from
Leon, Spain). They ended up in Havana, Cuba. So there is not much help I can
give you in the Fernandez department, but if I run across the Gillot name
somewhere on-line, I will save your e-mail address.
Good luck,
Ana Maria Ryan
