Thank you all for offering information on how to find my great-grandfather's Cuban military records. Following is the little information I have - all of it according to shaky and sometimes conflicting family memories...

Manuel Moreno Alcantara, born circa 1850/60 in Remedios, Cuba
married Eladia Crespo Gomez, born circa 1850/60 in Remedios (or Placetas), Cuba
During his lifetime he lived in and around Placetas and Fomento - Las Villas

GG Manuel was a Mambi who fought against the Spanish starting in 1895 until the end of the war in the area of Las Villas (Cienfuegos, Santa Clara, Fomento, Placetas) under the command of General Maximo Gomez. Again, according to family, he was stripped of his 'capitan' rank and demoted to soldier, then made his way back up to captain again (!?!?) Stories suggest either he or his horse was shot sometime during the 1895 war.

One other little bit of info... my dad says there used to be a kind-of historical novella dramatization on Cuban radio (Radio Mambi?) in the late 1940's or early 1950's called "Titanes de la Epopeya" where on one occasion, the family heard the actor playing Maximo Gomez talking to el Capitan Moreno....

Fact or fiction? I know it's not much to go on, but it's all I have so far. Any help would be appreciated.
