Alan, the following advice may not be much help to you, but here goes anyway.
You may want to consider taking classes in Spanish as a second language.
Genealogy interests apart, basic understanding of a language that is quickly
becoming the second national language of the United States won't do you any
harm.
And from the perspective of one's interest in Cuban genealogy, I'll share a
little anecdote with you. My mother-in-law is Italian and as a favor to her I
did a little research on the Internet in the Italiangen sites and forums, and
I found those folks who are really serious about digging into their Italian
roots recommend taking language classes. I was surprised, but can understand
how useful it can be when records are often in a different language.
Obviously I'm not going to learn Italian since I'm blessed with Cuban roots on
both sides of my family, though Italian parentage wouldn't be any shame of
course (just not as good <g>).
