Subject: Mormon data base soon on-line
Date: Tue, 02 Mar 1999 21:00:52 -0500
The LDS (Mormon) church is planning to put the Family Search data base on
line. This is an extremely important development since the Mormons have the
largest repository of genealogical data in the world. Although they don't have
too much data from Cuba, they do have an ENORMOUS amount of data from parish
records in Spain. Thanks to one entry I found in the IGI and subsequent
following of leads, I was able to locate 3 branches of my family still living
in Spain which was a complete surprise!
Here is the first official announcement received through WorldGenWeb:

Re: Internet
------------------------
The Family History Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints is developing a new Internet service designed to help people find and
share family history information.
- A beta test of the FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Service will be
conducted beginning sometime in March 1999. When ready for testing, it can
be found on the World Wide Web at http://www.familysearch.org. The web site
will only be active for a few weeks.
- Although the Internet is not authorized for use in Church buildings,
including Family History Centers, we are making your aware of the beta test
plans because patrons may ask about the service.
- When the results of the beta test have been reviewd, a formal announcement
will be made regarding the future use of this service.
We encourage you to review this test as as your schedule and access to the
Internet permit. Please give us any feedback or suggestions you may have.
Thank you for all you do to further the work of family history in your area.
