Gloria,

I do not think that the city directories started that early. I do not have the
specific year in front of me, but perhaps 1889 was near the first. Have you tried
the 1860 federal census? Also try the 1880 census via familysearch.org--there are
several George Barnums ans at least 2 Geo. W's.
