I should add my own experience. I was over there last year and everyone
was wonderful. They patiently looked up all of the people that I was
looking for. I had great luck at the Probate Court too. They took me
down into the vault and spent a lot of time working with me to find the
correct citations. Great service all around.
By the way: the law is a CT law not a Federal one.
All the best.

You can also use the Friends of the Library Card from the Godfrey
Memorial Library. It is also approved for vital record access.

Judy:
I'm a member of the Connecticut Society of Genealogists, and that's how
I got in
there. I am always very careful to be mannerly and polite, stay out of
the
employees' way, and put back what I take out, into the same place I got
it from.
I believe there is a law somewhere (perhaps at Federal level) that
states
something about if you're not a direct descendant, or belong to a
recognized
genealogical society, you can't get copies of death records unless the
person
has been dead 50 years, or was born over 100 years ago. You definitely
can't
get the ones that have Social Security numbers on the certificates--I
don't
think you can get those without being a descendant; the society
membership isn't
any help there.

Hi Jeanine,
Your message was truly interesting. I'm amazed they let you look up your
own
records in Waterbury! I've been hassled by other towns (not
Waterbury...that
was on my list to do in a few weeks) in CT when I asked for information
on
vital records even though I had the exact dates. It seems you have to
belong
to a genealogy society to have access to them. Without the card, they
give
you a hard time. I thought vital records were public information. They
say
it's to protect people's privacy...I find that excuse hard to believe
since
I'm searching the early 1900's.
