Do you mean New York City or New York State? The marriages for the city beginning before the 1870s are indexed and have been filmed the the LDS Family History Library. They are available to you through your nearest Family History Center/Centre. Just check the library catalog online for the correct film numbers. In my experience, the staff at the NYC Archives are helpful when you're there in person, but don't exert themselves very much for requests from a distance. They maintained that the marriage of my Cornish grandparents in NYC in 1916 wasn't recorded, but I found that they had applied at the City Clerk's desk, not being residents of the city, and the records were there (in City Hall).
