This little thread has been interesting, but I must correct the derivation
of the word. Although it is true of my experience with char ladies that they
seemed to survive entirely on tea, that is not the etymology of the word. It
is derived from Old English "Cerr" - to turn, though why I am not sure.
Curiously it also came back to England from America in the form "Chores"
