The original Pasty was eaten by the miners, hence the thick crimped crust
around the edge, as there were no hand washing facilities underground, it
gave the miners something to catch hold off. Once eaten the crust was thrown
away.
It was split into 2 halves inside, one side was filled with vegetables,
usually swede and spuds, and the other side was jam or apple.
That's why it was classified as a meal. Meat was introduced much later, but
in those days it was scarce and expensive. This was told by my Cornish
Grandmother who used to bake them as a little girl, for her brothers who
worked the mines.
No doubt there will be a whole list of corrections to this letter.
Didn't have Tom Sauce in those days!...... but it's nice with them,
Regards,
Steve
