Hi Friends,

The other day I responded to a name query on GEN-L. I thought seriously
about replying off-list exclusively but decided not to. Next day I
received a message from someone who was responding to my my reply. If I
had written off-list that contact would not have been made. (What's more
it was from a relative!)

It strikes me that there are replies which are "one-on-one" matters -
especially on CORNISH-L - I've had a number of conversations off-list
which would have had no interest to other Listers but true genealogical
conversations can be of interest (and reward) to others who suddenly
spot "connections". Even the recent conversations about the Spanish
Armada etc are of interest to a wider audience than just those
participating.

I decided to write this after reading today's of Rootsweb's "Missing
Links" - the article:

EFFECTIVE USE OF GENEALOGY NEWSGROUPS
by Richard A. Pence <>

"..........9. KEEPING THE CROWD INFORMED: Always post your responses
within
the group itself rather than replying via e-mail. Not only will this
allow everyone to benefit from what you say, it gives them a sense of
security to know they haven't missed anything.
Requests that responses be made via e-mail are obviously not intended
for you......... "

In fact the writer was being ironic but I disagree. Maybe I'm just nosy!
But issn't "nosy" the mark of a geneealogist?

Cheers,

Cornwall and anywhere - Currently most interested in the name in South
Australia, Victoria and NSW.]
