Pat,
Most of the time you have to write to the diocese where the churches are
located, especially when getting back into the mid 1800s.

When I was looking for early baptisms, the diocese (or archdiocese) told me
where mission records were kept. That's how I found my father's baptismal
record in another county from where he was born.

Most local Catholic churches would have a copy of the Catholic Directory
which will list all the diocese and parishes in the U.S. It shouldn't be
hard to find which one since you know the city and state.

Be flexible with birth/baptismal dates. I made my father a year and a half
older than he thought he was when I found his baptismal record. (He promptly
went out and bought a cane to carry around his "extra" years!)

Linda
