This is indeed a problem! I think all genealogical info that is posted on the
Internet should come with a warning (in big huge letters) - Assumptions and
Speculation only - unless of course one has documented proof in hand. I also
think info posted should include all known sources - both primary and
secondary. When I "speak genealogy" I use a lot of "supposedlys". Just
because someone who did research years ago says so doesn't make it the gospel
- unless their work contains sources and those sources are evidence or proof
and not just hearsay. If I am quoting info from a particular source and no
evidence or proof is listed this is when I say "supposedly" Info without
documented evidence or proof is still good. It provides clues for further
research and can be very helpful. So I vote we all continue to share our
assumptions and speculations but let's be sure to label them as such. Just my
humble opinion - for whatever that is worth!
