Is your James Franklin listed as a Nephew perhaps to William Casey on that
1870 census?
If so then check for Court appointments for Guardianship of James as
remember back then children could not be "per say" left to only their
Mother's but had to have a male Guardian for legal purposes to protect their
interests until they came of age.

Also do a search under Civil War for Casey men and then check to see which
of those men were injured during the war.
This may help give you some more clues to work with and help narrow your
list down a tad!!
