Probably best answer to this is that in those days spelling wasnt a top
priority people spelled the way it sounded to them or how the census takers
spelled it , some did not have much education as schools in the 1700's and
1800's were hard to find. For instance Randolph Casey of Arkansas his family
spells it Cacy , but when you see his relatives in Jefferson Co IL and
Johnson Co IL spell their name it is Casey. Take the name Driese , it became
Dries, Trees, Treece, Treese, Fries , the English could not read ,
understand German so variations came about.
