Hi Shauna, Following is some THOMAS info. Hope it transfers thru cyberspace
OK. I have a lot more info on the U.S. descendants, if we're looking for/at
the same line. I'm much more interested to find out anything about the ones
who stayed in Wales. Am keeping my fingers and toes crossed :D [NOTE: I
called the first 2 parents "First Father" and "First Mother" because I have
no idea of their names, yet.
Also, I reckon the "Alexander" baptized 11 Oct 1740 was also spelled
"Alixander" like his father, but I use the other spelling to keep them
straight in my mind.
A few items from the Will of John THOMAS (b. abt 1670):
Will dated March ye 29th 1715
"I, John Thomas, of the pitt of Mothvey in the County of Carmarthen[sic],
yeoman . . .
I give unto Mredith my brother 20s and two Shootes of Clothes and I give to
my sister Nel one yew an lamb and to my brother William one yew an lamb and
one pig and I give to my sister Margaret one shilling, and one shilling to my
father. And I give to Anne Thomas one sixpence and to John William one
six-pence. And all the rest of my goods I do give them totally unto
Alixander Thomas and I do make him my executor . . .
Signed in the presence of William Lewis and John William Thomas [his mark]"
So, John was a yeoman (a farmer who farms his own land, one step below the
gentry). He may also have been a miner, as he describes himself as being "of
the pitt of Mothvey" (Myddfai).
John leaves bequests to each of his 5 siblings and to his father. He must
have died relatively young, as he pre-deceased his own father.
Now the first Alixander probably emigrated to Cornwall to work in the tin
mines around Truro and St. Agnes. The rest of the family apparently remained
in the Myddfai area. Soooo, there should be a whole slew of THOMAS
descendants in Wales.
If anyone has any information, I would be deeply grateful :)
Thank you, Sue
