I know that my father signed up for the RAF at the beginning of world war 2,
but he was 'sent back' somehow, as his 'profession' prior to that had been
as a fireman on the railways . the ones that would stoke the fires on steam
locomotives, as opposed to firemen who put fires out. This was one of the
reserved occupations.
