Hi Pauline and all,
Does anyone know what the situation was with reserved occupations in WWI?
I've had a look on the internet and I think that for the first couple of
years the men in the army were mostly volunteers or regular soldiers. About
1916 conscription was introduced for single men 18 - 25 but by the end of
the war this seemed to include any men 18 - 50.
One of my mother's uncles was killed in the war but there is no mention of
any of my father's many uncles being involved - or indeed his father who
would have been 38 when the war ended.
Was it because they were coal miners or farmers?
What were the reserved occupations in WWII?
Gwenda
