1891 Census Online

MyFamily.com, Inc. Announces the Launch of the 1891 Census Online

copy of a Press Notice which is being released
later this morning (18th September). The following are its main points:

Later today, MyFamily.com Inc will announce the launch of the 1891 census
online and of a project to make available online indexed, digitised images
of census returns for England and Wales from 1841 through to 1891.
MyFamily.com has signed a licence agreement with the Public Record Office
(PRO) to publish these records. The task involves digitising more than 7
million original census return images and indexing more than 130 million
names.

As a first step in this process, the 1891 census for Oxfordshire is now
available online at http://www.Ancestry.co.uk/ .Visitors are able to search
a name index and browse through images of the original census returns,
containing information on more than 200,000 individuals living in
Oxfordshire in 1891. All of the 1891 Census returns for England and Wales
will soon be available, with MyFamily.com publishing additional images
weekly throughout the coming months. Upon completion, the collection will
be fully indexed,
searchable by name, county, and parish, and search results will link
directly to images.

"We welcome moves to put more of the UK's public records online to reach a
wider audience worldwide," said Anne Kilminster, Head of Enterprises at the
Public Record Office. "We wish MyFamily.com every success with this
project."

Note added by the FFHS:
Having visited the ancestry.co.uk site, there is currently a 14 day free
trial on offer. However, it says "Once your free trial has expired, your
subscription will be automatically renewed" and "After your free trial you
will be charged just 69.95 for 12 months of unlimited access.". So, if you
do take up the offer please make sure you cancel before the end of your free
period to avoid your credit card being charged. The Press Release also
refers to a quarterly subscription of 29.95.
