Hi Joan,

I couldn't find an O'Brien or Ryan family in the 1871 Census of North
Elmsley. However there were some families in neighbouring North Burgess Twp.
in 1871. This is from a transcribed publication by The Lanark County
Genealogical Society.

Ryan, Mary - age 56, b. Ireland, Roman Catholic, Spouse
Ryan, Henry - age 20, b. Ont, RC, Farmer, single
Ryan, Patrick - age 18, b. Ont., RC, Farmer, single
Ryan, Mary - age 13, b. Ont., RC, single

Family # 191
Ryan, Thomas - age 28, b. Ireland, Roman Catholic, Farmer, can't write
Ryan, Mary - age 28, b. Ont., RC, Irish Origin, Spouse
Ryan, William - age 6, b. Ont., RC,
Ryan, John Patrick - age 5, b. Ont., RC
Ryan, E. Ann - age 3, b. Ont., RC
Ryan, M. James - age 8m, b. Ont., RC

Family # 068
Ryan, John - age 22, b. Ont., RC, Irish Origin, Sailor ?, single

The following family in North Burgess was spelled O'Brine, not O'Brien ,
worth looking at.

Family # 177
O'Brine, William - age 38, b. Ireland, Roman Catholic, Farmer, Widower
O'Brine, C. Matilda - age 16, b. Ont., RC, single
O'Brine, John - age 14, b. Ont., RC, single
O'Brine, Maryann - age 12, b. Ont., RC, single
O'Brine, Margaret - age 10, b. Ont., RC, single
O'Brine, B. Elizabeth - age 8, b. Ont., RC, single

There were deaths listed for the Township of North Burgess 1871 Census for
the previous year and one name came up matching O'Brine.

O'Brine, William - age 5, b. Ont., RC, died January, Scarlet Fever
