Dear Shirley,
This is a late reply to the subject of Johnny Weissmuller. It
had to wait until I could visit my Grandpa which I did this past
weekend. I asked him what he could remember about Johnny Weissmuller and
he unfortunately could not recall much. Apparently they did attend St.
Michael's Catholic School together early on, but Johnny transferred out
to another school quite early on. He did recall that his family were
cooks at that Turn-Verein. He also was certain that he was born in the
Banat, but that he later tried to "Americanize" and down-played his
foriegn origens. There was a local YMCA (Larby ?) that they went to for
wrestling and swimming and other sports. My Grandfather said he had a
relative (shirt-tail) that claimed he taught Johhny Weissmuller how to
swim at this YMCA. His name was Nick Lutz. He had told my Granfather
that Johnny was not very quick to learn how to swim. He also recalled
Johnny had a brother Peter who was a lifegaurd at the North Ave. Beach.
I also asked my Grandfather whether he knew some of the names that were
mentioned, but he did not. ( Helfer, John Gasko, and Frank Wischler.)
Sorry about the late reply.
