Hurray! I found some Gasko's and one Winchell in the German telephone
directory. Now....
How much postage do I need to send a letter from here to Germany?
and
Would someone be kind enough to translate the following into German for
me in case they do not read English... Proposed letter....
Dear _____________
My name is Diana Gasko Keener. I am looking for my father's ancestors.
What I know:
Nicholas Gaszko (1878-1910) married Helen Winchell (1882/84-????)
They had three children. My father, John Joseph, Mike, and Mary.
Both of the families, Gasko and Winchell, came to Hungary shortly after
the French Revolution (cir. 1794). There were eleven brothers in my
father's great grandfather's family. At least one went to America in
1804, another to Germany, at least one to Hungary.
My father was born in Temesvar, Banat region, on August 5, 1901. ( At
that time Temesvar was in Hungary). He died in 1987 in St Petersburg,
Florida.
In 1902 the family moved to Detroit, Michigan where other Gaskos had
settled. While Nicholas was in Detroit he worked as a machinist. He was
diagnosed with tuberculosis in 1905 or 1906. The doctors recommended he
move to the Mediterranean for his health and the family moved there
shortly after. After awhile he began to feel much better, believed he
was cured, and moved the family back to Hungary. He died in 1910 within
a year of the move. Nicholas had a bicycle and artificial limbs shop,
probably in Temesvar.
Helen moved the children back to New York City in 1912.
That is the extent of my information. I would appreciate any leads on
either Nicholas Gasko or Helen Winchel.
Can you help me?
Diana Gasko Keener
