Subject: Visiting Romania - more tips

Hello - All the suggestions for traveling in Romania have been so
helpful, I want to add at least one. Two years ago the streets of Bucharest
were packed with the homeless, and at times you could be overwhelmed with
little children trying to sell you things or services. Be especially aware
of the tactic of one child facing you begging, and several waiting behind
you to snatch and run.
The suggestions for gifts were excellent, and I would only add a
note on a rather taken-for-granted item -- toilet tissue. The lei is so
worthless, I have seen it used as a replacement for this. It not only will
cost you per sheet in public restrooms (when you can find one!) but in the
small towns it is more likely to be very harsh brown paper similar to those
brown paper towels we hardly ever see anymore! Although Texaco is becoming
wide-spread, and some have restrooms, if you are in the farmlands, you will
need to become resourceful. And take some of your favorite "pink stuff" for
upset tummy.
Other things I "forgot" to pack when I came home were band-aids,
aspirin, and similar items, as well as blue jeans and tennis shoes.
I hope everyone who's been in this part of Europe recently will
write with more comments about how to make things go smoothly. Now that
Bucharest has a McDonald's, no telling what will happen next!
