In on-line IGI, I found two marriages for an Elizabeth HIGGINS (information below). If this is the same woman, then John HOWATT died before 1864. If you check the 1855 birth of daughter
Margaret on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk you will receive a lot of information about the parents. You should also be able to find the death of John HOWATT.
