"Of that ilk" means "of the same" so in relation to a family, it would mean "of that family". It can apply to any group, family, set, class and such like. I'm not aware of it having a different meaning today - I have always used it in relation to my own or someone else's family. "Of my ilk" - "of their ilk" etc.
