Hi Bruce,
Thank you for your interest in my request for info.
There are several distinct Thom families in Ayrshire with no apparent links
(as yet) and mine is one of the 'unknown' lot which we are still
researching. The furthest we have got back to with accuracy is David Thom
b.1799 (as named on the message board.)
We are currently waiting for a copy of his registration certificates from
which we should be able to determine his parents and where they hailed from.
As yet there is no information on any siblings named John, which might have
answered your question.
There is however a strong legend within the family (yet to be confirmed or
denied) that the above David was a brother or cousin of James Thom the noted
Ayrshire sculptor, who had a brother John (waiting verification) born 5 Nov
1807. [He could have emigrated to Canada at age 18, in 1825.]
We do know that some of our early Thom's went to North America (one of the
descendents was in touch about 21 years ago but I can't recall the details.)
If you want to contact me at my personal e-mail address with further
information on your John Thom, I may be able to offer more detailed
assistance.
Hope this is of help / interest.
David.
