Liz - you're not likely to find dentists listed alongside the physicians in
the early 19th century directories because dentistry did not develop a
professional organisation until the middle of that century. Most dental work
up to say 1850 would have been carried out by someone who had been
apprenticed to a dental artisan or a barber. They would not have had a
medical education, so they would not be listed among the gentry and
professional classes.
However, you will sometimes find a pharmacist/druggist/chemist has "(and
dentist)" added to the entry. Where a directory has a street-by-street list
of residents, you may find the trade given after a person's name. This
sometimes includes dentists.
