Could Andrew be a nickname for Alexander?

I have a Mary BROWN, born about 1852/1853. On the Censuses, her birthplace
is listed at Stevenston, Ayrshire. I cannot find her birth or her parents.

Her marriage record lists her parents as Andrew BROWN and Marion FERGUSON.

I can find no marriages or births associate with these 2 people. And trying
to find the death records of Andrew and Marion is like searching for a needle
in a haystack! There are TONS of Andrew Browns and Marion Fergusons, and I
have no other clues to narrow down years of death, besides Mary BROWN's marriage
record. It's impossible to know who they might be in the censuses, as well.

I did find the following:

Alexander BROWN married Isabel FERGUSON on 31 Jan 1839 in Aberdeen.
Alexander BROWN married Mary FERGUSON OR HENDERSON 19 Sep 1851in Leith North

The only marriages I could find for Marion FERGUSON were to a John BROWN
(there are several of these).

At ScotlandsPeople, I did a search for Female births between 1 Jan 1850 and
31 Dec 1854 with the surname BROWN and a parent surname of FERGUSON. I
received only 3 results:

Jessie BROWN born 17 Aug 1853 to Alexander BROWN and Isabella FERGUSON in
Aberdeen
Mary Duncan BROWN born 7 Mar 1852 to Alexander BROWN and Isabella FERGUSON in
Aberdeen
Susan BROWN born 4 Jul 1852 to John BROWN and Marion FERGUSON in Cambusnethan

There are 7 pages of results doing a search in the same time period of Mary
BROWN, female, looking in all parishes, and not specifying a parent surname. I
haven't looked at these pages yet, as it would waste 7 credits, and how would
I even know if I was looking right at her? I have all the results in which
parent names are similar to those on her marriage record.

So, does anyone have any idea of what I can do next?

I would really appreciate the input.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth Edgar
