Hello again Alan,

Witch Rd is definitely still standing and I'd be happy to take some pictures
for you when I next go up if you wish.

There was a business called Grant & Ritchie in the 1870s you know?
William Ritchie was a Foreman at the engineering works of Andrew Barclay's
Caledonia Works in Kilmarnock. When George Caldwells smalltime engineering
works came up for sale after Georges death in April 1876, William bought it
along with Thomas Maxwell Grant and a local Doctor called James McAlister,
who provided most of the funds. Grant bought the Townholme Engine Works too
and the firm of Grant & Ritchie and Co was the result. There are tales of
Grant and Ritchie leaving work from Barclays one evening with a bunch of
engineering drawings and their new, very similar, business springing up
overnight .......but that's libellous and another story! Grant & Ritchie
profitted until the economic depression of the 1920s but did not survive and
the works closed on 23rd July 1926 and was liquidated two years later.

Might this be your William Ritchie?
Ann
