Dear Listers

I wondered if someone might know what is meant by the term "low" in the
below paragraph. I found it in the Riccarton parish church entry in respect
of the banns and marriage of my GGGGrandparents.

The entry reads in part "Alexander SMITH in the parish of Riccarton and
Elizabeth MUIR in the low church parish of Kilmarnock"
