While I am unable to add to this thread I would appreciate some assistance
to solve the origin of my middle (family) name which has been a feature of
our family since about 1795. Hugh and Elizabeth (Boyd) (both born Mauchline)
named their 7th child James Hamilton REID. Many of his descendants carried
Hamilton as part of their name.
