Dear Marg,
I've been looking on the 1881 Census and think I've found James, Ellen and family at 7 Grange St, Kilmarnock. Would that be them? They have seven children.
I've also found what could be James his father, at Bee Bank, Witch Road, Kilmarnock. He is 72 and a widower and has 6 children living with him, ranging from 35 - 25 years old.
Strangely enough, I've also found a marriage entry between a John Laughland and an Elizabeth Barnes in Kilmarnock in 1861. They then appear in the census (at least I think it's them) at 21 Robertson Place Kilmarnock. Elizabeth is "Eliza B. Laughland", and they have 8 children! My Barnes family has more than one connection with Robertson place, so it's intriguing me, but I don't know which Barnes this Elizabeth is, and it's strange that a Laughland is marrying a Barnes when they were already the "Barnes Laughland" family in 1832 when your James was born. HELP!
If that wasn't enough, I found a Matilda B. Laughland living at 18 East Netherton Street, a widow aged 71, which is nextdoor to number 20, which is where one of my Barneses was living at the same time!
As you can see, I'm confused. Does any of this make sense to you? Your Laughlands and my Barneses seem to be linking together.
Very keen to know more,
Susan
