Surname: ALLISON
-------------------------
Whilst on holiday on the island of Madeira 400 miles off the African coast,
I just had to visit the 'English' Cemetery to look for Scots. One stone
reads simply " Sacred to the meory of Thomas Dunlop Allison Esq re MDRN
A Native of Irvine. The island was a trading post and a staging post for
provisions and water for ships bound for South Africa. My great grandfather
was photographed there on his voyage to the Cape .He was to die in S.Africa
in 1890.If anyone has a connection,I'd be glad to forward the digital photographs
I took of the stone and the lovely floral gardens at the cemetery on West
side of Funchal city. There is also the Scots Kirk still holding Sunday
service in the city centre.
