> Could some kind and knowledgeable lister help me with a puzzle concerning
a town or village. My great grandmother lived in Dunbartonshire at the time
of the 1871 census, but gave her birthplace as Ayrshire. Her name was Janet
Morton and I want to know if there is a place in Ayrshire called New Hill or
New Hills or if this is a confusion on the part of the census taker for
Newmilns? Also, where in Ayrshire would I find Newmilns? I live in Sydney,
Australia, but have a Motoring Atlas of Britain which is an Ordnance Survey.
Help please?

Janet ,
Newmilns is about 5 miles directly east of Kilmarnock. I note the IGI cites
a Janet Morton born in Newmilns in 1841, and lists her spouse as John
Kirkland. Is that the lady you're looking for? If not there are lots of
births cited at Loudoun. I note Loudoun Castle is only 2 miles from
Newmilns. Good Luck!
