Subject: Elizabeth Tannock
I have only recently started to search past the information my grandmother (Mary Elizabeth Neill - daughter of John Tannock Neill - son of William and Elizabeth) had given me. I do not have a death certificate for Elizabeth - only a copy of the cemetery transcriptions from Avondale Cemetery in Stratford, Ontario, Canada which reads: a) Neill//In/memory of/Wm Neill/died/Jan.7,1895/AE 85 years//A native of Ayrshire/Scotland//Also his wife/Elizabeth Tannock/died/July 5,1897/AE 73 years// b) Samuel G. Neill/born/Feb.10,1857/died/July 18,1924// c) William Neill/born Nov. 4, 1843/died/Mar 8, 1908//
The William Neill family was not listed on the Ontario census but was on the 1861 census. On that census, William and Elizabeth were listed as 44 and 34 years old respectively and born in Scotland. Children were all listed as born in Upper Canada, however my grandmother had said that all except the two youngest children were born in Scotland. Children listed were William, 17, Andrew, 15, John, 13, James, 12, Hellen, 10, Mary, 8, Jane, 6, Samuel,4, David, 2. Another son, Robet and a daughter, Eliza, were born in Ontario in the early 1860's.
From Samuels birth date of 1857, then David would have been born in 1859 - so if they were all born in Scotland as my grandmother told me, the family must have emigrated in about 1860. If the census was correct in listing them as all born in Upper Canada, they would have had to emigrate before 1843.
Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
