Subject: Kilmarnock orphans

I have recently discovered that one of my Ancestors, William STEVENSON, and his brothers Thomas and James were orphaned at quite a young age. Therefore, I am trying to discover where I might find information about them in Kilmarnock. The three of them were born between 1818 and 1821. I am not sure when they were orphaned, presumably before 1840! Does anyone know what became of orphans in the early 1800s in Kilmarnock? Was there an orphanage? If so, are there records extant from the orphanages? Were family members typically kept together? At what age were children permitted to live on their own and possibly care for younger siblings?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
