Hi Sue,

I have never heard of that custom but of course in the days before, Radio
and TV and the cinema and modern means of transport I am sure that such
things did happen. In those good old days people worked from dawn to dusk
and on Sundays would go to church and this sounds very much like a church
picnic kind of thing. Events like this were also popular at Easter, where
you rolled your home made real Easter eggs.

Until fairly recently many of the roads in Ayrshire
had a footpath that ran beside it and many times I have walked from Cumnock
to Ochiltree and Cumnock to Auchinleck on these foot paths. (sidewalks in
the USA)

Regards, Dan.
