Hello Fellow-Searchers
Can any help me sort out this mystery, please? Here is the
situation as I know it.
William CORNELIUS (25) brass finisher, s/o George Brodie
CORNELIUS (dec'd) brass finisher of St Andrew's Street Kilmarnock, married
Jane (Jeanie) LAWSON (20) d/o Hector LAWSON at Ayr Mills, Mill Street, Ayr
on 26 July 1878. I made a transcript of their Marriage Certificate.
On 13th January 1879 a son was born at 17 Willock Street,
Kilmarnock, to William & Jeanie (ms LAWSON) CORNELIUS, and named George
Brodie CORNELIUS. I made a transcript of his Birth Certificate on which the
date of his parents' marriage agrees with the above.
In 1880 William CORNELIUS died in Kilamarnock. I don't have a
copy of the Death Certificate.
In 1881, Jane CORNELIUS (22), widow, was on the Census at the
home of her father Hector LAWSON, 1 Mill House, Ayr, along with George B
CORNELIUS aged 2.
In 1891, George B CORNELIUS aged 12 appears on the Census Index,
his mother (as Jeanie Lawson CORNELIUS) having remarried (to Peter WILSON)
in 1883. I don't have a copy of this Marriage Certificate
So far so good - all is quite clear. But here's the mystery
On 29th November 1907, Neil Lawson CORNELIUS, an upholsterer
(28 - giving a birth year of 1879/80) s/o William CORNELIUS and Jane
CORNELIUS (who I thought was WILSON by this time!) ms LAWSON was married at
10 Alexandra Terrace Ayr to Mary Garland LAWSON (27) d/o Alan LAWSON. No
Neil Lawson CORNELIUS or even Neil LAWSON can be found on the 1881 Census
CD,
nor did Neil appear when I copied all the CORNELIUS births from the
Scottish Indexes. It is possible that I overlooked it.
To complicate matters further, I have a Death Reference for a
George Brodie CORNELIUS in Ayr in 1940, but I don't have a copy of this
Death Certificate. I have 3 others called George Brodie CORNELIUS on my
data base, but as one was drowned in Ayr Bay in 1869, one died in infancy in
Paisley in 1897 and the third was alive in Australia until 1942, GBC s/o
William & Jane was the only one remaining, so I put the two together. I'm
not sure at this stage if the age at death was given on the Index, but I
think it was which further gave me cause to match them up.
Sorry to be so long-winded but thought I'd better explain the
whole picture. My problem is, am I dealing with twins or one man who changed
his name before he married and back again before he died? If twins, surely
both births would be registered and both on at least the 1881 Census.
Short of buying the 1940 Death Certificate (which I can't manage
at the moment), are there some ways to help me explore this situation
further?
Many thanks for your patience. I look forward to your
suggestions.
Cheers.
