Subject: Almont in Ayr?

I live in a town named Almont, which according to local tradition was
given it's name by a man named James Thompson from Ayrshire. It was
supposedly named for a general Almonte of Mexico. I don't buy that -
especially since I have discovered that there is an Almont Hotel in
Ayr. Can anyone tell me how the name "Almont" might be related to the
Ayrshire area?
