When did you last check your CD-ROM settings under Windows? ItÂ’s a good
idea to take a quick look to see that you're getting all the performance
you can from your CD-ROM drive.
To investigate your CD-ROM settings, choose Start, Settings, Control
Panel from the Start menu. Then select the System object. Click the
Performance tab on the System Properties sheet. Choose the File System
button within the Advanced Settings box. Finally, select the CD-ROM tab
on the File System Properties sheet.
There, you'll find two important settings: Supplemental Cache Size and
Access Pattern. Unless your PC is very old, you probably have a 4X or
faster CD-ROM. In this case, you want both settings set to their
maximum:
Supplemental Cache (Large) and Access Pattern
(Quad-Speed or higher). Read your system's documentation if you're
unsure about the speed of your CD-ROM drive and the appropriate settings
for a slowe drive.
